The film follows a family that learns its matriarch has only a short while to live — but rather than break the news to her, they plan a big family wedding so they can all spend time together. It’s loosely based on a personal experience that director Lulu Wang first discussed on the “What You Don’t Know” episode of the radio series “This American Life.”
