'Black Summer' Renewed for Season 2 by Netflix - thewrap

“Black Summer” has been renewed for Season 2 at Netflix, the streaming service announced on Wednesday.

The series, which stars Jaime King, is a prequel to Syfy’s now-ended “Z Nation,” which premiered in April with its eight-episode first season.

“Black Summer” followers survivors of a cataclysmic event who contend with zombies — and each other — to reach a military evacuation site. King stars as Rose, a mother, torn from her daughter, who embarks upon a harrowing journey, stopping at nothing to find her. Thrust alongside a small group of American refugees, she must brave a hostile new world and make brutal decisions during the most deadly summer of a zombie apocalypse.

The second season of the zombie drama will begin production in Alberta, Canada in 2020 and also consist of eight episodes.

Returning cast members includes King (who has a producer credit on Season 2), Justin Chu Cary as Spears and Christine Lee as Kyungsun. Additional cast will be announced at a later date.

“Black Summer” is created and executive produced by Karl Schaefer, the creator of “Black Summer’s” mother series, “Z Nation,” and John Hyams (“Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning”). Hyams will serve as the showrunner for Season 2. Abram Cox also executive produces.

The series is a Netflix Studio Production.
