'The Princess Bride' Remake? Cary Elwes, Jamie Lee Curtis Call Idea Inconceivable - thewrap

While a remake of “The Princess Bride” hasn’t actually been announced, any plans for one are already sparking serious backlash.

Stars and public figures like Jamie Lee Curtis, Mia Farrow, Ted Cruz and even the star of the 1987 classic “The Princess Bride” Cary Elwes formed their own Brute Squad in opposition to the idea after rumors started circulating about a remake on Tuesday evening.

“There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one,” Elwes, who plays Westley in the film, said on Twitter in a reference to just one of his many famous lines.

The backlash was sparked following a comment by Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra in Variety’s profile of Norman Lear. Lear is a producer on “The Princess Bride,” which was directed by Rob Reiner and written by the late William Goldman based on his own novel. A remake may not immediately be in the works, but it sounds like there’s some excitement.

“We have so many people coming to us saying, ‘We want to remake this show or that show,'” Vinciquerra told Variety. “Very famous people whose names I won’t use, but they want to redo ‘The Princess Bride.’ Some people want to do animated versions of some of the sitcoms. Not a month goes by when we don’t have an idea coming from some very big name wanting to do things with Norman.”

That didn’t stop fans of the film expressing themselves and quoting their favorite dialogue.

“Oh really? Well, I married the six fingered man, obviously why we have stayed together for 35 years and there is only ONE ‘The Princess Bride’ and it’s William Goldman and @robreiner’s,” Jamie Lee Curtis, who is married to Count Rugen actor Christopher Guest, said on Twitter. “Life is pain highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something!”

“‘The Princess Bride’ is the greatest thing, in the world–except for a nice MLT, mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe. They’re so perky, I love that. DON’T MESS WITH PERFECTION,” Senator Ted Cruz said in a tweet.
