Summary
Sam (Christian Bale) just graduated in psychiatry and moves to Los Angeles with his fiancee, Alex (Kate Beckinsale). They stay at Sam's mother's house on the hills on Laurel Canyon. Sam starts working in a hospital while Alex is busy finishing her dissertation. Sam's mother (Frances McDormand)is a hippie music producer who is finishing a record for her boyfriend's band. Alex starts getting involved with Sam's mother's lifestyle of drugs and rock and roll while in the meanwhile Sam falls for a beautiful Israeli colleague (Natascha McElhone) at his hospital.
