C., a needy man, knocks on the doors of a neighbor building and asks its residents for some bread for his starving children. P. opens the door and they engage in long conversation about selfishness. P. shares bread to prove he’s a good person, but the next day when he enters the elevator he sees a note: “Dear residents, Yesterday I came to your building, because my family was starving. I’ve went through every floor, knocking on every door. And none of you, not even one soul in this building gave me anything. I wanted to let you know. ” Aggravated and embarrassed of what neighbours will think of him, P. tears off the note and pays a visit to C. After a heated conversation, C. starts typing more notes. Shocked and furious, P. smashes a typewriter on C’s head in front of his children. He returns to his building and plans to knock on every door to let everyone know that he has actually shared bread with C.
|C. is quite poor and not ambitious. He values reason, integrity, independent thinking, does not conform to societal standards and norms. He doesn't care what others think of him. Focuses on providing for two little children (they are not his, they were abandoned at his doorstep, so he sheltered them). Wants to make the world better by teaching people moral lessons, but doesn't have energy or time for that. His weaknesses are his obsession with ideas and stubbornness.
|P. is poor, but lives above the poverty line. Works as manual labourer. He is not very sociable, introverted, doesn't like to meet new people. Smart and is quite condescending to others. His behaviour, speech is influenced by how he wants to be seen. Will not try to impress others because it is exhausting to support good image. Deep inside he wants to be admired and respected by others. He doesn't understand C. behavior and motivation at all.
