Character Descriptions:
FLORENCE - F - Strong belt voice (to E). 30-40. Born in Hungary; has been brought up in America since 1956. She is clever, theatrical, touching, vivacious, volatile. Freddie’s chess “second” and lover.
FREDDIE - M - Rock tenor (to C). 30-40. An American chess champion. A cross between
Bobby Fisher and John McEnroe. Arrogant and temperamental, but a genius; his chess playing
revolutionary. We need to see his artistry along with his danger and his obsessiveness.
ANATOLY - M - Baritone (to G sharp). 30-45. A Russian chess champion. Unexpectedly
charming. He doesn't seem a romantic hero at first, but becomes one through his personality. An intelligent, feeling, passionate man.
MOLOKOV - M or F Alto or Bass (down to F sharp). 30-60. Not a fake, comic, stage Russian. Intellectually formidable. Anatoly’s chess “second.”
SVETLANA - F - strong belt voice. 30-45. Anatoly’s wife. Domestic, wholesome.
WALTER - M - Bass-Baritone (down to G sharp). Fifties. Head of the Americal delegation. A marketing agent. Seemingly respectable, substantial, trustworthy.
ARBITER - M or F - rock high “baritone” (up to A). Thirty to early forties. International businessperson. Smooth, but with a quick temper. Strong stage presence, commanding.
ENSEMBLE - F & M - CITIZENS OF MERANO, REPORTERS, DELEGATES, CIVIL SERVANTS and various other roles
CHOIR - F & M (in addition to the Ensemble) - All voice parts . 15-99+. No acting experience needed. Choir will be treated as part of the orchestra. Rehearsals for this are limited (some Sundays 7-9:30), but singers must be available for all of tech and all performances.
