Description:
Open auditions for The Pirates of Penzance, a comic opera by Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert, will be held on Monday, May 20th, and Tuesday, May 21st beginning at 7:30 pm. in PM&L Theatre's Tribute Hall, located at 877 Main Street in Antioch, IL. Doors will open at 7:00 pm. Auditionees will be seen in order of their arrival. Please arrive no later than 8:30 pm.
The director, Mark Audrain (PM&L directing credits include Almost, Maine) is looking to cast 10 female-identifying roles, any ethnicity, and 12 male-identifying roles, any ethnicity. The vocal roles include Mabel (soprano. late teens-early 20's), the Pirate King (baritone, stage age 30+), Ruth (contralto, stage age early 40's), Police Sergeant (bass, any age), Frederic (tenor, stage age 21), Major General Stanley (baritone stage age 50's+), and an all ages chorus playing pirates, police, General Stanley's daughters and sisters and aunts, etc.
Auditionees should be prepared to sing a Gilbert and Sullivan song, or a song in the style of the show. There may also be cold readings from the script.
The opera revolves around Frederic who joins a group of tender-hearted pirates after being released from his indentured apprenticeship after completing his 21st year on the planet. He falls in love with Mabel, Major Stanley's daughter, and learns that his birthday falls on February 29th which means he, technically, only has a birthday every leap year so he has to stay with the pirates he apprenticed with for another 63 years. Ever dutiful, Frederic's only solace is that Mabel will wait for him faithfully until that day arrives.
The Pirates of Penzance will run for three weekends, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, beginning July 26th, and closing July 11th.
