Description:
Curry for Lunch? revolves around a modern day family lunch in which Jason, a young Anglo Australian, brings home his Sri Lankan Australian girlfriend to meet his family. The play promotes multicultural values and explores social attitudes; examining how a family, which considers itself open-minded and liberal, overreacts to an interracial relationship.
The performance will be held in the end of January 2011. Rehearsals will be held through September – early January. Catering will be provided at all rehearsals. Actors and the 1st AD will be given a small fee.
We are looking for a 1st AD and actors to play the following parts:
Helen - Older Anglo Australian woman. Jason, Ally and Megan’s mother. Caring, kind and always anxious. Also slightly judgemental.
Jason - Mid twenties, Anglo Australian. Jovial, friendly and loud, with a caring, loving side. Likes to shock his family.
Ashwini - Early to mid twenties, Sri Lankan Australian. Jason’s girlfriend. Gutsy and confident. The past few years of her life have matured her greatly.
Ally - Early twenties, Anglo Australian. Jason’s younger sister. Law uni student, bright, bubbly and fed up with her family.
Megan - Late twenties to early thirties, Anglo Australian. Jason’s older sister. Judgemental with a jealous bent. Has a young child, Keanu.
Eshan - Early twenties, Sri Lankan Australian. Ashwini’s younger brother. Works in a law firm. Friendly and relaxed.
Ratz - Early twenties, Sri Lankan Australian. Ashwini’s cousin. Studies com-law. Confident, outgoing and a little too friendly. A bit of a show off.
Ruban - Early twenties, Sri Lankan Australian. Ashwini’s cousin. Med student. Reserved, “the perfect son”, friendly and responsible.
Warren - Older Anglo Australian man. Helen’s brother-in-law. Very friendly, quintessential Aussie bloke. Likes a good chat and likes a good beer.
Gwen - Older Anglo Australian woman. Helen’s neighbour. Nosy, self-interested and can be nasty. Could be played by same actor who plays Ally.
The auditions will be held on the 28th and 29th of August and the 4th and 5th of September in the Sydney CBD. Other times can be arranged if necessary. Actors will be required to read a small section of the play which they will be sent prior to the audition.
To find out more information or arrange an audition time, please email the director, Maddy Butler, at curryforlunch@gmail.com. Please email your CV and headshot. When an audition time has been arranged, we will send you a more detailed description of the character/s you are auditioning for.
