Synopsis: “Du lang! Du lang!” (©Gonta, Marrella 2010) journeys the audience back to the pre-psychedelic 1960’s to Port Richmond, a row home section in Philly. Mia a Catholic high school sophomore is an upbeat, wide-eyed teen who lives behind ‘Frank’s Pump Room’, her father’s barbershop. She meets Ted, an ordinary white-bread teen, on a blind date; it’s love at first sight. They attend same-sex catholic high schools and their religious moral upbringing matches up. Except when Ted’s hormonal instincts drive him to want more than Mia can give, which leads to mounting tension in their relationship. Add to the mix Salvatore, the ever popular dreamy hunk next door who has a secret desire to win Mia’s heart, with conflict in his own.
FEMALE TEEN CHARACTERS (4):
MIA: ITALIAN AMERICAN FEMALE -16. Upbeat, personable, flirts on the edges of parental and religious limits regarding moral and teenage social issues; jealousy is her undoing. petite stature.
LORI: ITALIAN AMERICAN FEMALE -16. naturally ‘cool’ and ‘with it’, the ‘look up to’ figure in the crowd. Attractive. SLOOPY: ASIAN AMERICAN FEMALE - 16, goody-two-shoes with proper 1950’s manners. Fluent in Pig Latin. Sweet smile. CORRINA: IRISH AMERICAN FEMALE--16, the effervescent vinegar and spice with a self inflated ego. She has to be in the know. Great red hair preferred.
MALE TEEN CHARACTERS (6):
TED: GERMAN AMERICAN MALE--17, average guy, overinflated ego, has raging hormones in dire need of attention is caught up in catholic moral conflict. Think toned down Eddy Haskall.. Wavy hair, clear complexion a plus.
SALVATORE: ITALIAN AMERICAN MALE –18, the neighborhood teen icon, the female heartthrob trapped in the 1950’s James Dean look is inwardly sensitive, spiritual. Outrageously good looking, dark ‘dreamy’ bedroom eyes.
NUNZIO a.k.a. NUNZEE or NUNZ: ITALIAN AMERICAN MALE –18,fluent in 1960’s street slang; embarrasses easily, masks his insecurity with smart-alecky attitude has a marshmallow center; Average looking.
TOMMY: IRISH AMERICAN MALE –17, shifty eyed, persuasive, self-absorbed, a glib talker who is a real instigating snake in the grass. Curly hair, shifty eyes.
STEVE: POLISH AMERICAN MALE –17, (17), a 1950’s naturally respectful gentleman borders on the geek’. Serious demeanor is offset by slapstick persona. He speaks fluent Pig Latin: Wiry hair.
ALBERT: NORTHERN ITALIAN AMERICAN MALE –18, lovable with lots of naïve bones in his body. Pretty-boy, natural blond hair, blue eyes, flashy smile.
FEMALE ADULT CHARACTERS (2):
MRS. EANNELLI: ITALIAN AMERICAN FEMALE –Early 40’s, As wife, she’s a hip fashionista; as a mother, she’s old fashioned, overprotective, proper, stern. Very attractive, svelte, preferably tall.
PREFECT OF DISCIPLINE: ITALIAN AMERICAN FEMALE –LATE 40’s fearless, squeaky voiced Franciscan Nun revered by the student body. Stern eyes, facial expressions, voice.
MALE ADULT CHARACTERS (2):
FRANK THE BARBER a.k.a. FRANKIE BEE: ITALIAN AMERICAN MALE –mid-40’s, naturally comedic, nails 1960’s slang language which enables him to cross the generation gap. Nice looking, an exaggerated ethnic nose, a plus.
FATHER WALT: IRISH AMERICAN MALE –Late 30 to early 40’s, a just-one-of-the-guys genial priest. Boyish grin, cautious eyes, thinning hair.
