Description:
Quintessence Theatre Group in Philadelphia is seeking Union and non-Union submissions for its upcoming production of The Prince and the Pauper, by Mark Twain, in a world premiere adaptation written and directed by Josh Carpenter. All roles paid.
Seeking the following roles:
Actor 1: Edward Tudor: The Prince. A ten year old boy, son of Henry VIII. Regal and privileged, yet capable of great empathy for the suffering of others. Bears a striking resemblance to Tom Canty. Likely to cast an adult female actor in this role, or possibly an adult male of small stature.
Actor 2: Tom Canty: The Pauper. A ten year old boy, the son of a very poor family in the slums of London. A dreamy and imaginative youth with high aspirations. Bears a striking resemblance to Edward. Likely to cast an adult female actor in this role, or possibly an adult male of small stature.
Actor 3 (20's – 50's): Lord Hertford: Edward's uncle, brother of Henry VIII. A born politician. John Canty: Tom's alcoholic and abusive father, a professional thief. And ensemble roles. Ideally tall and athletic.
Actor 4 (late 20s – 40s): Mother Canty: Tom's mother, long-suffering and kind hearted. Sergeant Bowers: soldier in the King's Guard. The Ruffler: leader of a gang of thieves. The Hermit: a solitary religious madman. And ensemble roles: Seeking female actor with great versatility, late 20's-40's.
Actor 5 (late 20s-40s): Grandma Canty: Tom's alcoholic and abusive grandmother, John Canty's mother, a professional beggar. Lord St. John: A high-placed courtier in the court of Henry VIII Humphrey: the Prince's whipping boy. Captain Stormfield: Captain of the King's Guard Lady Edith: a woman in trapped difficult circumstances. And ensemble roles.
Actor 6 (30s – 50s): Henry VIII: a giant man, in every way, though in extremely ill health. Miles Hendon: newly returned from war abroad, becomes Edward's friend and protector. Burns: a thief, beggar, and con-man And ensemble roles. Seeking actor with an imposing presence.
Important dates: Workshop February 10 – 12. First Rehearsal: April 24. First Preview: May 16. Opening: May 19. Closing: June 3.
