Description:
Director Karen Dervin and Assistant Director Kristine Mackin are looking for a diverse cast of 9 actors (1 man, 8 women, ages 17 and up) for Ed Graczyk’s classic comedy/drama produced by The Hovey Players.
Auditions will be held at Hovey, 9 Spring Street in Waltham, on January 4th at 2pm and January 7th at 7pm, with callbacks on January 17th at 1pm. Readings will be from the script. Familiarity with the script is encouraged.
Performances are March 13-28, 2015
The story takes place in 1975 as a group of quirky high school friends honor their promise to reunite 20 years after the death of their idol, Jimmy Dean in their hometown of McCarthy, Texas, a dustbowl remnant of days gone by. Their reunion reveals not only the depth of their friendships, but the secrets they have guarded and built their lives around. Funny, intimate, and dramatic- a wonderful showcase for the ensemble cast.
Because the characters reside in West Texas, some form of an accent is requested (but not required) for auditions. Character Breakdown:
Juanita (40s+)- Owner of the Five & Dime. A simple Texas woman who is guided by her religious convictions
Mona (30s-50s)- Seemingly fragile; she prefers to live in a dream world rather than the real one. Has remained in this small town and changed very little in 20 years
Mona (THEN) (teens-30s)- Naïve, deeply romantic; imagines herself as different and better than the small town people she grew up around
Sissy (30s-50s)- Vivacious, outgoing with a quick, sarcastic wit. On the surface, she is only concerned about her attractiveness and having a good time, but she has unexpected depths
Sissy (THEN) (teens-30s) – A young woman with big plans to escape her humdrum life. Extremely aware of her sexuality, she has a "reputation" as the town tramp
Joe (teens-30s)- He does NOT fit into the small town and struggles to find his place in the world. Sensitive, confused, he's an outcast to everyone except Mona and Sissy
Joanne (30s-50s)- Mysterious visitor who comes to the reunion with a big secret. Sensual, escaped west Texas to live a very different kind of life
Stella Mae (30s-50s)- One of success stories of McCarthy, she has done well with her life – at least financially. She is loud and boisterous, but her obnoxious behavior covers some deep longings
Edna Louise (30s-40s)- Pregnant with her seventh child. Shy, awkward, but extremely sweet-natured
Please note: There are very specific descriptions in the script of the age and “type” of each character. The Directors are committed to casting actors who can “embody” these characters, not necessarily “look like” them. All ages, types, sizes, genders, and colors are most welcome!
