Hope in Chaos is a true story revolving around the experiences of Hope, a member of the NY State Senate Disaster Task Force inside Ground Zero after September 11th. This will be a first production of the script, and is a great opportunity to be part of the original cast.
Please read character descriptions carefully and send headshot and resume to firstname.lastname@example.org for an appointment. Evening/weekend rehearsal schedule. Non-union. No-pay.
Hope: Hope is a young redheaded New Yorker. She?s an actor and bartender by trade in her 20?s. She?s strong, smart and sarcastic, and is always looking for humor in the madness. Like the rest of the team, she is overwhelmed, but she is unafraid of hard work and determined to make progress.
Janie: Janie is a sharp-tongued stand-up-comic and bartender. She?s in her late 20?s, early 30?s. She?s born and raised in Texas and a New Yorker by choice. She is jaded and it suits her. She loves people...a spectator to the human experience. She is remarkably empathetic, but has a zero tolerance policy for people who do not care about other people.
Ted: Ted is a young, wealthy conservative white guy in his early 20?s. A young Kennedy-esque politician-in-progress. He believes in the status quo and the political system. He is smart and very well read. He does not believe in government conspiracies. He is a young republican who believes in personal social responsibility.
Karl: Karl is probably Russian, and in his mid to late 20?s. He rarely speaks, and you never quite know what he?s thinking, but he is among the first to take action when action is needed. He prefers to watch, wait, and listen. Much of Karl?s character is revealed in the way he responds to the obvious suspicion of those around him.
Natalie: Natalie is in her early to mid?20?s. She is petite but firey and and eager to help. She wants to understand what the hell is going on. She is intensely compassionate, and struggles not to empathize too much. She is the rock and the record-keeper of the team.
Vic: Vic is a consummate aspiring New York Politician in his 20?s. He comes from a family of politicians. He is always shaking hands, making deals, kissing babies and playing his angles. While he can come across as overbearing and unscrupulous, like the rest of the team, he ultimately wants to help. He just wants to make sure he looks good while he?s doing it. The team suspects he may be bipolar. MUST have a strong brooklyn-italian accent.
Cap: Cap is short for Captain America. The devastation of 9/11 offends him personally. He?s the oldest in the group, early to mid 30?s. His politics are liberal, and he is acutely aware of the contradictions between their work at Ground Zero, and the Ground Zero that is presented on the news. He believes there is more to the story, and he wants others to ask more questions.
Reporter: (female - 30's-50's) Brenda is a reporter for the NY Times. After 9/11 she interviewed several of the workers in ground zero, and is currently (in 2010) writing a series of articles about the deteriorating mental health of the volunteers. Hope is part of her research. She believes, and will use Hope to prove, that most 9/11 volunteers suffer from serious mental health issues, and need better access to free mental health services.
First Firefighter: male, 20's to 30's, strong build, deeply disturbed by what he has found at the site.
Second Firefighter: male, New York/Brooklyn accent. 20's to 40's, Strong, comical, charming.
Tavern Owner: male 40's to 60's, paternal
Salvation Army Worker: female, teens to 30's, innocent, confused, petite.
