Description:
Galaxy Theater Company announces auditions for their upcoming production of the classic murder mystery, AND THEN THERE WERE NONE, penned with cruelty by master of the craft Agatha Christie, and directed by Ryne Hanz.
Auditions, callbacks, rehearsals, and performances will be held at The First Congregational Church of La Grange, located at 100 6th Avenue, La Grange, Illinois 60525.
THE STORY:
The story begins when eight disparate guests arrive at an isolated mansion located on an island off the coast of Devon, and are tended to by two married domestics who prepared the house for their arrival. During the first evening a gramophone recording accuses all ten people of past crimes that went unpunished by the law. Soon they start dying one at a time, and the remaining guests deduce that the murderer is one of their own.
CAST OF CHARACTERS: (PLEASE NOTE: British Accent encouraged at auditions)
THOMAS ROGERS (Supporting/M/30s-50s): He is a competent, middle aged manservant, not a butler but a house parlor man. He is quick and deft and just a trifle specious and shifty. "A tall lank man, grey-haired and very respectable." He and his wife are hired to handle housekeeping and cooking for the guests on Soldier Island. To the guests he appears dignified and dutiful but when their backs are turned he is shady and disrespectful.
ETHEL ROGERS (Supporting/F/30s-50s): THOMAS' wife, she is a worried, frightened looking woman. "She is pale and ghostlike with a flat, monotonous voice. Very respectable looking with her hair dragged back from her face. She had queer, light eyes that shift the whole time from place to place. Frightened of her own shadow she looked like a woman who walked in mortal fear." She is also a bit of a gossip.
FRED NARRACOTT (Supporting/M/20s-70s): A boatman who brings supplies and guests to Soldier Island. He appears onstage at the beginning of the play and referred to throughout.
VERA CLAYTHORNE (Lead/F/20s-30s): She is a school teacher who comes to the island to act as a secretary for the mysterious owners. "Nice looking, very young lady but the ordinary kind, not glamorous, no Hollywood touch about her." She is practical and careful but also a romantic. She and PHILIP LOMBARD are attracted to one another.
PHILIP LOMBARD (Lead/M/25-30s): He is attractive, lean, well-tanned with a touch of adventurer about him. He is very taken with VERA CLAYTHORNE. With a pleasant, easy voice he is resourceful and creative, always cracking jokes and use to be a soldier in Africa. He is hired to watch out for any trouble that may occur on Soldier Island. "Moves like a panther, smoothly and noiselessly."
ANTHONY MARSTON (Supporting/M/20s-30s): A creature of sensation and of action he is a rich, athletic, and handsome youth. He likes to drive recklessly and seems to lack a conscience. He shows no remorse for his actions.
WILLIAM BLORE (Supporting/M/30s-60s): An ex-police inspector who is hired to come to the island under false pretenses. He is practical and careful but has very little imagination. Well built, his experience inspires others to look to him for advice. He is loud and bold and frequently takes initiative but also makes frequent blunders. His attempts at blending in with the more refined guests makes for a comedic effect.
GENERAL JOHN MACKENZIE (Supporting/M/50s-70s): A general in WWI, he is the oldest guest on the island. Still proud but losing his grip on reality. Upright soldierly man with a tired face. Very gentle and kind. He sent a soldier on a very dangerous mission who subsequently was killed because he found out he was having an affair with his wife. Make this character your own, Ms. Christie gives very little in the way of his description.
EMILY BRENT (Supporting/F/40s-70s): She is a bible thumping, self-righteous old biddy who so badly shamed a young, unwed pregnant girl in her employ that she took her own life. A sour old maid who never consciously feels any remorse. "She is enveloped in an aura of righteousness and unyielding principles."
SIR LAWRENCE WARGRAVE (Lead/M/50s-70s): Lately retired from the bench he is obsessed with justice and with death. He is a hanging judge and speaks in acid tones. When the guests realize they are being hunted and killed, they turn to him because of his air of authority and leadership skill. "Frog like face, hunched up attitude, pale shrewd little eyes that always looked half asleep."
DR. EDWARD ARMSTRONG (Supporting/M/30s-50s): A successful doctor who comes to Soldier Island because he is told the owner, Ms. Owen, is sick. He is a recovering alcoholic who accidentally killed a patient during surgery as he had had too much to drink. He is preoccupied with maintaining his reputation and success. He is also very gullible, slightly timid and a weak personality.
