Character Breakdown/Description:

Christoper Isherwood (M, 20s-30s) - A young Englishman living in Berlin. More interested in being seen as a writer than in the act of writing, more interested in observing life as it moves past him than in living it. He's closer to what he wants in life than he realizes, but will likely never take the steps necessary to achieve it. Teaches English as a side hustle. His relationship with Sally is the core of the play. He is the lens we see the events of the play through.

Sally Bowles (F, 20s-30s) - A lounge singer of middling talent but extraordinary gravity. She hides her fear and vulnerability behind an uncanny ability to transform into what she thinks the people around her want her to be, sliding in and out of people's orbits when she tires of what they can offer her. She's not quite on the run, but it certainly seems like she is running from something. Her relationship with Christopher is at the core of the play.

Fraulein Schneider (F, 40s-60s) - a matronly German woman. She is kind and neighborly (if also a bit crass at times), but as the political landscape shifts around the characters her fears about the world around her begin to transform into prejudices.

Natalia Landauer (F, 20s-30s) - a young German Jewish woman. The daughter of a wealthy merchant family, she is caught between pride in her family and their heritage and the rising dangers of ascendant Naziism. She is clever and observant, if also a bit naive. She is learning English from Christopher.

Fritz Wendel - (M, 20s-30s) a young German Jewish man. Has been hiding his Jewish heritage in order to try and stay out of the increasing polarization of the country. He is forced to confront the consequences of that choice when he begins to fall in love with Natalia.

Clive Mortimer (M, 30s-50s) - A big, loud, bombastic, filthy-rich American. The kind of rich where small things like new cars and spontaneous vacations don't even register in his check-book. Always in it for the fun, never in it for the long-haul. He becomes entranced with Sally, and seemingly offers her and Christopher a lifeline out of the day-to-day grind they are navigating, but proves to be flaky and unreliable.

Mrs. Watson-Courtneidge (F, 40s-60s) - English, Sally's much put upon but ultimately caring Mother. The definition of a helicopter parent, but also perhaps concerned with good cause. Not necessarily more concerned with appearances than realities, but sees appearances as deeply important data about what's going on underneath.
