Description:
Casting Call for original script “Guardian Angel”
I am an MFA Film Production graduate student at UT Austin casting for actors to interpret my original script into a 7-minute short film on 16mm film. This would be a three-day shoot on location in Austin.
"Guardian Angel" follows a child's first encounter with the loss of a loved one, and the realization that the adults around her are as baffled by death as she thinks she is. At her father's wake, young Josephine tries to remove his wristwatch as he lay in a casket, but her pregnant mother Eva stops and scolds her. As commotion among the grieving adults intensifies, Josephine is sent outside where, in nature, she can retreat into herself and a world that makes more sense to her. Thinking Josephine feels both dismissed and in shock from grief, Eva attempts to soothe her daughter by giving her a gift, only to realize too late that Josephine is in fact the one person who has learned to comprehend death. In the end, the little girl is the one who has learnt that if you truly love someone who has passed away, you have to let him or her go.

Breakdown:
Role Name | Gender | Ethnicity | Age Range | Description |
---|---|---|---|---|
Josephine - Female Lead | Female | Any Ethnicity | 6-10 | Josephine has recently lost her father and is learning about death for the first time. She has limited dialogue, so most of her performance will be using non-verbal expressions in closeups. The script calls for a 6-year old, but I am willing to cast the best actress for the role. |
Eva - Female Lead | Female | Any Ethnicity | 31-40 | Eva has recently lost her husband and struggles to deal with this death alongside her responsibilities as a mother to Josephine, and personal care as she is also 6-months pregnant. She is surprised to learn that she can learn a lot from her daughter. |
Marta - Female Supporting | Female | Any Ethnicity | Any Age | Relative/friend to Eva. Marta provides emotional support on the day of Eva's husband's wake. |
Extras | 0 | Any Ethnicity | Any Age | Female and male extras of all ages to portray either guests in mourning at a wake, or funeral home attendants. |
