Project Title | \"This Is 40\" Argument Scene |
Description:
Pete and Debbie’s relationship reaches a boiling point after they confront each other about the wrongdoings in their marriage.
Seeing as this is a project for a director’s workshop class, I am interested in playing with the characters’ identities to give a new meaning to the scene. This means tweaking Apatow’s original script and swapping the characters’ genders, ethnicities, sexual orientations, etc. in order to evoke a different audience perception than his intended viewer response. Because of this, I encourage adults of all backgrounds and identities to audition. I would like to use this project as an opportunity to further explore character creation and its correlation with tone and meaning.
If you are, or can pass yourself off as, a middle-aged adult, I would love to have you at auditions! Please email codcar@elp.rr.com for a copy of the script and come prepared to audition on February 2nd (from 2 to 5 p.m.) as the character you identify with the most, regardless of gender/ethnicity/sexual orientation/etc. I look forward to being a part of a creative take on this scene and I hope you are as well!
Breakdown:
Role Name | Gender | Ethnicity | Age Range | Description |
---|---|---|---|---|
Pete | 0 | Any Ethnicity | 31-40 | Pete (39) is the owner of his own record label that is not doing very well, putting his family’s financial stability at risk and him under much stress. Out of guilt and obligation, he reluctantly sneaks money to his begging father. Pete pushes Debbie away far too often than he should and though he has come to terms with the life he has been given, he doesn’t do what he can to make it better. |
Debbie | 0 | Any Ethnicity | 31-40 | Debbie (40) is coming to terms with abandonment issues brought on by her father while attempting to navigate life with Pete by her side. She can be quite needy and expects things out of Pete that can be unrealistic at times. Debbie is realizing that she and Pete aren’t as in-sync as she once thought. |
