Description:

Description:
A brand new folk opera called Pascagoula is casting all ethnicities, but especially seeking strong singers of color to audition. The show combines a centuries old folk tale and adapts the famous opera Madame Butterfly to 1930s Mississippi. This show is historical in nature and the racial and cultural casting is specific.

Audition Dates:
Monday, July 1st from 5-7PM
We will accept video submissions.

Audition Location: TBD

Roles:
Butterfly- 20s-30s WOC, Native American and/or African American heritage. Mezzo. Strong but not guarded. Owns prime property that Pinkerton wants.

Pinkerton- 20s-30s, white. Baritone or tenor. Rich and way too charming for his own good. Running for governor in Mississippi.

Sharpless- 20s-40s, any ethnicity. Baritone or tenor. Pinkerton's campaign manager with a used salesman vibe.

Suzanne- 20s-40s, WOC. Alto. Butterfly's best friend, keeps trying to get her to accept Jesus- definitely a lady who wears those amazing church hats. Very loyal and principled.

Gordon- Later 20s-40s, any ethnicity, any voice part. Truly the con man of the town, and is currently trying to make a dime off of Trobedeau.

Trobedeau- 20s-30s, any ethnicity. Baritone or tenor. Foolish loverboy who follows Butterfly around like a puppy. If you play ukulele that's a plus. This character is written for a creole or cajun dialect.

Bonze- Later 20s-50s, African American. True bass. Will sing with chorus. He is Butterfly's uncle and doesn't want her to sell her land to the man. Dabbles in hoodoo.

Kate- 20s-30s. Soprano. White. Will sing with chorus. Charm school debutante. Everything Butterfly isn't.

The River Chorus: 1-2 sopranos, 1-2 Altos, 2 Tenor, 2 Bass.

Time Commitment:
Rehearsals will be the July 29- September 5, meeting 3x a week for 2 hours, likely Mon or Tues evening, Thurs evening, and Saturday afternoons depending on actor availability.

Performances are September 6 and 7.

Material To Prepare:
A 32 bar musical theatre selection. This folk opera uses Mississippi blues, Appalachian folk, and musical theatre styles, so no need to use Mozart or a fancy arts song.

If submitting a video submission: please attach H/R to email, perform 32 bar musical theatre selection, and if bi or multiracial tell us a little bit about what that means to you.
