Logline: Isaac, a confident yet solitary young boy living in a mansion with his mother and grandmother, finds his persistent domestic routine disrupted by the haunting visions of his malnourished pre-adolescent mind.
Brief Character Blurbs
Isaac: 8-14 years old. White. Blond hair. He will dominate the film in terms of screen time, so comfort in front of a camera is a must. Body language and facial nuance is key, and takes precedence over dialogue ability.
Kathy: 35-50 years old. White. Blond or Brown hair. She is an overworked but passionate mother who loves her son very much despite acknowledging her neglect of him. The bulk of the dialogue will belong to her, but expressive non-verbal body language is vital as well.
Doug: 35-50 years old. White. Blond or Brown hair. He is the brother of Kathy’s absent husband and is slightly estranged from the family, but comes to the Christmas Party that is the film’s centerpiece. Quiet, mysterious, and elusive, yet not without a hint of compassion. Facial subtlety is key.
Unnamed Shadowy Figure: 30-70 years old. Any hair color. Small role. Little acting required.
Rick: He is pretty much cast, so you don’t need to write anything for him. Regardless (35-50 years old. White. Blond or Brown hair.)
Anne: 30-50 years old. White. Blond or Brown hair. Anne is Kathy’s sister and only appears in the film for a few short scenes, one of which will involve dialogue. She is a supportive, kind woman who is not as close to her sister as she’d like to be.
Laurie: 30-50 years old. White. Blond or Brown hair. Laurie is Kathy’s sister-in-law and only appears in the film for a few short scenes, one of which will involve brief dialogue.
Steve: 25-30 years old. White. Blond or Brown hair. He is Isaac’s oldest cousin and has only one line of dialogue but appears in a couple scenes.
Jordan (male), Ryan (male), Cassie (female): 17-25 years old. White. Blond or Brown hair. They are Isaac’s other cousins and have a few scenes of improvised chatter in the background.
PARAGRAPH CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS
Isaac: Isaac, a young boy who has spearheaded his own domestic routine in the absence of an at-home guardian other than his grandmother during the day, is starting to feel a sense of independence, yet he remains utterly dependent upon the resources provided by him by his mother. He enjoys the comfort of a routine, and the perceived dedication it takes to carry it out. Taking care of his grandmother, playing with his dog, completing homework, listening to old records, and using the pool table are the activities that fill his day, and he feels very little need to be sociable with peers outside of school. He loves his mother, but his dinner conversations with her are usually slight and slow moving. Because of his tendency to keep to himself, he tells no one when he begins to see unusual things around the house.
Kathy: An extremely busy and high profile city worker by day, Kathy returns home at night seeking relative peace and quiet in her rural mansion. Still, she’s a rather frenzied and hard-working woman, never truly able to put down her work. As such, it often seems as if she’s neglecting her son, but ultimately she has great love for him matched only by her love for her extended family. She is a character defined by a series of small realizations that she expresses in the subtlest of body movements and facial expressions; she constantly reminds herself to take a break from work and focus on her son yet repeatedly fails to fully meet her own wishes.
