Description:
'Miracle Grow' is the debut feature film to be directed by Emma Kinni, an MA Directing student at the Bournemouth University. Filming will take place early May and go on for approximately one month (however, most character will not be needed for more than a few days within that month).
Emma is looking to cast a high number of actors, for roles including the main protagonist Sofia, among others (most of the characters are in their twenties, others include 30-something mother and father for Sofia, as well as 3 children to play Sofia and her siblings as children).
Actors will be unpaid apart from travel expenses that will be covered, unless the film makes a profit. Synopsis below. Contact Emma at emmakinni@hotmail.com if you're interested- she will send you details of Audition in Bournemouth to take place in early February. Please note that you will need to pay your own travel expenses to cover the audition.
The unchronological Miracle Grow tells the story of twenty-something Sofia who befriends a group of people through which she becomes involved in multiple illegal drug abuse. The film deals with a lot of issues such as death, national identity, drug/alcohol culture, malfunctional families and relationships, among others. Despite the extremely heavy content of the film, it is told in a style that is entertaining, lighthearted and at times extremely funny- it is a black comedy. Elements of animation are integrated into real action throughout the film.
Breakdown:
Role Name | Gender | Ethnicity | Age Range | Description |
---|---|---|---|---|
Sofia | Female | Caucasian | 18-24 | Sofia is intelligent, lively and extremely funny; she has just ended up in the wrong company that brings out her reckless and experimental side, resulting in 24/7 partying. She is loud, vibrant, the life of the party. That is, till things go wrong, she gets too fucked up, doesn't know where to stop and starts behaving badly. She had a normal upper-class English upbringing, and her family has always been loving and supportive of her. Above all, Sofia wants to break out of the cycle she has ended up in, but does not know how. She is sick of the artificiality of the people around her. She wants to break free. She wants to be a writer. She wants to fall in love. |
Laura | Female | Caucasian | Any Age | Laura is Sofia's "best friend"; they have both ended up in the same cycle of drug-abusive party people, and got together as a team to survive it. Laura and Sofia used to be genuinely fond of each other, until Sofia's partying ways went a bit further than Laura's, and Laura became concerned of Sofia and whether she wants to be around her anymore. Laura is slightly more reserved and organised than Sofia. She is, at times, quiet and passive. Having said all this, she is also a heavy partier, going along with her crew. Laura comes from a quiet home, raised by a single parent and no siblings. Laura gets Sofia to realise she has gone too far, and ends up helping to break her out of the cycle. |
Eric | Male | Caucasian | 18-24 | Eric is a genuinely good friend to Sofia, and also a part of the drug cycle. He is posh, sporty and goodlooking; a charmer, a hot rich boy. |
Robert | Male | Any Ethnicity | 18-24 | Robert is the love of Sofia's life. Nothing ever happens between the two, no matter how much Sofia wants it. Robert is Sofia's only sober friend. He is well-educated, indie, alternative. He is what they would call a hipster. He wants nothing to do with Sofia's drugs or drug-addicted friends. He would fall for Sofia, but the drugs stop him from letting himself do so. He genuinely cares for her, though. He wants her to get out. He wants her to survive. Deep down, he loves her. |
Mad Dave | Male | Any Ethnicity | 18-24 | Mad Dave is a fun character. He is always energetic, completely reckless, the clown of the group. As his name suggests, he is mad- madly fun, madly crazy, and, of course, madly addicted to mephedrone. Mad Dave is a free spirit. He just does not give.a.shit. Perhaps the coolest character of the film. |
Xavier | Male | Any Ethnicity | 18-24 | Xavier is extremely cool. He regularly walks around without a shirt on. He has multiple piercings and tattoos. He smokes half a gram of weed a day. Xavier is spoiled-> he lives on the dole, and the drugs stop him from getting a job. Xavier thinks that he is a rebel. He spends all of his time compaining about the government. He believes that he does more for the world this way than through a job. He has a relationship with Sofia, but this ends as she gets sick of his inability to identify the two as a proper couple. Xavier likes to just take it easy. |
Rab | Male | Any Ethnicity | 18-24 | Rab thinks that he is Che Guevara. He is what an elderly woman would coin good-for-nothing. He steals stuff, breaks stuff, and takes drugs. The others in the cycle like him purely because he is always up for fun. He is slightly younger than the others, the little brother.Rab has his stomach pumped when 18- his heart nearly stops. He thinks this is wicked. |
Samantha | Female | Any Ethnicity | 18-24 | Samantha is completely "together". Her clothes, her hair, her nails- perfect. She looks like in a few years time, she will be the perfect housewife. 50s housewife. She is the person to introduce Sofia and Eric to mephedrone. |
Joe | Male | Any Ethnicity | 18-24 | Joe is Sofia's abusive and aggressive ex boyfriend. He is a wake and bake, on seven joints a day. He is goodlooking, but good-for-nothing. Sofia tries to escape the memory of him. |
Danny | Male | Any Ethnicity | 25-30 | Danny is a rockstar Sofia meets at a gig. He is sexy, fun, and quite dumb.He is from America. Him and Sofia have a one-night stand. |
Mrs Smith | Female | Caucasian | 31-40 | Sofia's mother, Mrs Smith, gets plenty of screentime. She has tried to raise Sofia well; perhaps too well. Is Sofia rebelling against her? Sofia's mother is no more naive than an average mother... which means pretty naive. She either does not realise what is going on, or else chooses not to. God forbid. |
Grandfather | Male | Caucasian | >60 | Sofia's grandfather appears in the film on numerous occasions. He is very proud of his Irish heritage. His wife, Sofia's grandmother, died a few years back. Sofia's grandfather has never recovered. He is a man awaiting death, living passively with a broken heart. |
