About the show: In the wake of their father's death, siblings Lee & Joey embark on a road trip from Dayton to Philadelphia to carry out their father's final wish of being scattered in a meaningful place - the Wawa parking lot. Driving on the turnpike at night, they meet a series of surreal characters (played by a small but mighty ensemble) who offer insight into their journey, while the sibling duo attempt to deal with their own grief and what the future of their family looks like. The show features: rest stops, tunnel wizards, soda cave wisdom, matching shirts, and a disgusting hoagie legacy to uphold.
Character Breakdown
Lee: (Older sibling, any gender, late 20s/early 30s, POC) Lee is a type A, goal-setting, list-making, people pleaser who will not be deterred by their recent job loss and the humiliating move back in with their mother and stepfather, Glen. In the wake of their father's death, Lee throws themself into planning, taking their role as the older sibling very literally and proving to everyone that despite personal setbacks, they're still on top on things. They can will away the grief with enough mantras and spreadsheets, right?
Joey: (Younger sibling, any gender, early/mid 20s, POC) Joey is fresh off a string of post-college internships and looking for full time employment. They're smart and quiet, but they weren't close to their dad and would rather hole up in a cave (or basement) with their multi-sided dice and graphic novels then make small talk with a thousand relatives they barely remember. They're shy and prone to shrugging, but the avatar in their heart is wearing a cape and ready for battle.
Ensemble: (Not age, gender or ethnicity specific) You are a soccer mom with dead eyes and a mythical, soothsaying creature named Matt. You're a tree who's deepest wish is to ride in a convertible and a very bitchy snake who has a lot of opinions about THINGS. This character will be part of an ensemble tasked with playing multiple fast-paced, mostly comedic parts throughout the show. You should be versatile, ready to move, and have the kind of expressive face that makes cartoon characters jealous. Will you need to climb on a dude's shoulders? Probs. Wear a bunch of hats? Literally and figuratively. Speak in a Russian accent then switch to being an inanimate object two minutes later? The show hasn't been written yet, but tbh we want you to be ready for anything.
WHO WE ARE
Tribe of Fools is dedicated to creating new plays that blur the lines between theatre, dance, acrobatics and other highly visual and kinetic storytelling techniques. Each year we present a new show that is as physically daring and relevant. Our ensemble push themselves to their physical limits while creating dynamic characters that make you laugh until they make you cry.
Tribe of Fools has tackled issues like gender roles, toxic masculinity, violence, sexual identity, learning disabilities, family, power dynamics and even time travel. With our "signature sweet bad-ass approach to theatre" we bring a sense of levity and fun to our productions in order to make complicated and difficult themes accessible and identifiable to the audience.
Several Tribe of Fools shows have been Barrymore nominated, including 6 nominations for their production of Fishtown: A Hipster Noir. In 2018, Tribe of Fools was the recipient of the Steve and June Wolfson Award for Best Evolving Theatre Company.
